When the Same Default Tracking Code is Installed on Pages with Different Domains

In the digital world of online marketing and web analytics, tracking codes (or pixels) are essential tools used to measure website traffic and user behavior. But when the same default tracking code is installed on pages with different domains, it causes issues that compromise the accuracy of your data.

Using the same default tracking code on different domains (or subdomains) is not recommended because it will result in different users and sessions being associated with a single domain, which can lead to inaccurate visit counts and user session tracking. Additionally, combining the data from different domains will distort your reporting and make it difficult to understand your overall performance.

The solution to this issue is called cross-domain tracking and can be configured at a property level in Google Analytics (GA). To enable it, the sites or domains that you want to track must use the same GA4 Universal or gTag container code, and have the same UA ID assigned to them.

Once this is done, you can create a view filter that matches the hostname of each domain to rewrite the request URI field in all page views, so that the full domain name appears in the page name when displayed in the Behavior > Site Content > All Pages report. This will ensure that each unique page is reported only once in the All Pages report.
