What Are the Options for Filtering Data in Google Analytics?

Google Analytics can provide a wealth of valuable data about your website, but there's also the potential for that data to be skewed in a number of ways. Using filters can help you avoid this problem and make sure you're getting the most accurate, useful information from your Google Analytics reports and dashboards.

Filters in Google Analytics allow you to create customized views of your data by including or excluding specific types of traffic. They can be used to focus your reporting on the most relevant data for your business or to remove data that you're not interested in seeing (such as visits from spammers or spiders).

Unlike Segments, Filters apply to all of your reports and are automatically applied each time the Report API fetches new data. For this reason, it's usually best to use filters instead of segments for analyzing specific subsets of your data.

Because Filters permanently restrict the data stored in a View, it's important to always keep one View that does not have any Filters. This is often called the "All Website Data" view, and it allows you to retain a complete record of your data should you ever need to see it again. For this reason, it's a good idea to add your filters to a Testing or Staging View before adding them to your main production View. This will prevent any accidental or unforeseen changes to your data. You should also consider creating a filter to exclude internal IP addresses from your production view.
