How to Hook People's Attention

Have you ever read a line that caught your attention so fast, it was almost impossible to turn away? Then, you were probably reading a well-crafted hook. Hooks are presentation-opening tactics that grab and hold people's attention so they want to hear what else you have to say. They are also great writing techniques.

You have only about 30 seconds to capture someone's attention before they start evaluating your credibility and deciding whether or not to listen to you. And, if they don't start listening, they will quickly forget everything you have to say. Luckily, you don't have to be the TED Talker or thought leader on a topic of global importance to use a strong hook. In fact, even the most mundane presentations can benefit from a strong opening.

Think of your audience and the topic you're presenting and find ways to create a hook that will resonate with them. For example, if you're presenting on the benefits of exercise to a group of gym members, consider kicking off your presentation with a shocking statistic on the health risks associated with obesity. Or, if you're delivering a presentation on ocean acidification to an environmental board, try using a personal story that illustrates ecological changes you have witnessed in your lifetime.

You can also incorporate a question into your presentation to engage audience members and pique their curiosity. But, keep it simple and short - audiences aren't interested in TMI (too much information). Remember, a short and intriguing question can capture the audience's attention just as easily as an intriguing statistic.
