Make the event as newsworthy as possible by offering a variety of interview opportunities and providing interesting facts about the issue. This will give them more options for stories that they can run in their publications, and it will ensure that the coverage is both timely and relevant. Consider bringing a seasoned media liaison to the event. This person can recognize the media, personally greet them and connect them with spokespeople for interviews. They can also point out the best locations and times for photo-ops and b-roll.
