How to Change Your LinkedIn Username

Changing your linkedin username is one of the most important things you can do to improve your profile and professional branding on LinkedIn. It may seem a little trivial but having an unbranded or even branded URL that doesn’t accurately reflect your current job or business can hurt your ability to be found on the site and make it less valuable as a tool for job searching.

The good news is that LinkedIn makes it very easy to change your public profile URL, or username. In fact, they encourage you to do so. It’s very simple and they’ll automatically forward any traffic to your new handle.

To change your linkedin username, first log into LinkedIn through the website (you can’t change your username on the app). Click the “Me” icon at the top of your home page and select “Settings & Privacy” from the dropdown menu. Then, on the left sidebar of the settings page, click “Edit public profile & URL”.

From here you’ll see your current Public Profile URL listed below your profile picture. You’ll see an option to ‘Customize your public profile URL,’ which is where you can edit your username. Note that the maximum character length has recently been increased to 28 characters, so you have more flexibility here. However, you’ll still only be able to change your custom URL once every 90 days to prevent abuse. Once you’ve changed your URL, it may take up to 48 hours for all LinkedIn websites to recognize the new name and start sending traffic to your profile.
