Changing your phone number on TikTok can be a real hassle, especially when you don't have access to your old number. This predicament is all too common, and unfortunately, TikTok's customer service response often leaves users frustrated.
Why Phone Numbers Are Important on TikTok
TikTok uses phone numbers to enhance user experience in several ways. Your phone number helps with account security, login processes, and connecting you with friends. It also aids in improving your ad experience on the platform. While vital, phone numbers and emails remain invisible on your public profile and can be updated or removed whenever necessary.
Phone Number Verification Issues
The main issue arises when users try to change their phone numbers but can't because they need to verify it with a code sent to their old number. TikTok's response often directs users to contact their cell service provider to reactivate the old number, a solution that many find unhelpful and impractical.
Steps for Changing Your Phone Number on TikTok
TikTok does offer a standard procedure for updating your phone number:
- Open the app and go to Settings
- Select 'Manage my Account'
- Enter the verification code sent to your old number
- Enter your new phone number
Despite these steps, the inability to receive the verification code makes this process futile for many users, leading to heightened frustration and the need for external assistance.

Improving Account Security
TikTok users are advised to set up 2-step verification for added security. This can be done via SMS, email, or an authenticator app. By doing so, you add an extra layer of protection to your account, helping to secure your personal information.
Controlling Account Suggestions
Users have the option to manage how TikTok suggests their account to phone contacts. You can choose whether or not TikTok suggests your account to your contacts and vice versa. Additionally, you can stop syncing contacts at any time to maintain your privacy.
In conclusion, while TikTok offers a structured way to update phone numbers, the reliance on an old number for verification often leaves users in a bind. Enhanced customer service and alternative verification methods would go a long way in alleviating user frustrations.
