How Long Does It Take For A Website To Show Up On Google?

As we all know it can be a bit of a waiting game when you launch a new website, or update an existing one. It’s important to remember that there are a lot of factors that determine if your website is found and what position it will rank in search engines like Google.

A few weeks ago, John Mueller (Google’s Search Relations Manager) posted a new video in his Ask Google series answering a frequently asked question: “How long does it take for a website to show up on google?”

Before you can appear in search results, your site must be indexed. This is a process where the aptly named Googlebot finds your website and crawls it, i.e. takes a snapshot of the content on each web page and files it away in Google’s database. It can take several hours to a few weeks for this process to occur.

If you’re hoping to make your site more visible, there are a few things you can do to help speed up the indexing process. These include sharing your XML sitemap with Google, using a plugin on your site to notify Google that you have a new post or page (like this), and linking to other websites with relevant keywords in your industry.

It’s also important to note that once your site is indexed, that doesn’t guarantee you will show up on page 1 of search engine results. That requires a whole separate process, which we will discuss in another article.
