How Apple Changed the World

The Apple II was not the first personal computer but it changed how computers were designed. It was the first to be sold as a complete product, with a moulded case that tidily integrated all the components. It meant that anyone without any electronics knowledge could simply buy the Apple II and plug it in.

While it may not have invented the first personal computers, graphical user interfaces (GUI), mp3 players or smartphones, Apple positioned its products correctly and understood how to make them attractive to mainstream users. Its sleekly designed computers (Macintosh) made it seem more like a magic device than a box of circuit boards and cables, which helped to propel its sales.

In 1998, Apple introduced the iMac, with its curvy colourful gumdrop shape and friendly software. It was the first affordable and user-friendly PC to integrate a digital audio system. The iPod music player sparked a revolution in the way people access and listen to their music, offering consumers easy, portable and affordable mp3 listening. iTunes, the jukebox software that accompanied it, cemented Apple’s position in the world of digital media and helped to drive sales of iPods and Macintosh computers.

Apple’s market-beating turnaround under Jobs grew its business into the largest publicly traded company in the world, with hundreds of billions of dollars in revenue. After his death in 2011, Tim Cook consolidated that power and continues to push boundaries with innovative, beautiful and functional products that are used by millions of people around the world.
